Poster design notes
We each had to design a poster for our drive time project. At the start of the lesson we discussed whether we should all make posters about the topics we had to research or if we should all create a poster with the same general topic. We had a vote and it was decided that we would all create a poster with the same general design.
The next thing we had to vote on was what the slogan can be. We all came up with ideas and wrote them on the board. As there were quite a lot of ideas we had a class vote on which slogan should be chosen. After the voting we were left with two slogans with the same amount of votes: “It’s not a game” and “You’re dead”. This led to a discussion about which should be picked and it was decided that they should be joined together and make: “It’s not a game, you’re dead”.
The first thing I decided to do when designing my poster was to pick a background colour. This took me a bit of time because I couldn’t decide on the right colour; I had a look through many swatches of colours to find the right colour. I settled with an all black background. I decided to use this because black brings out the other colours on the poster much better than other colours could. I wanted to have the background completely the same colour because with more than one colour it might become overwhelming or just not look nice. The poster looking nice is a key factor because if it doesn’t then people probably won’t look at it and as it is a poster, people looking at it is the whole point.
The next thing that I had to do for my poster was to start designing the text on it. As the slogan was split into two parts I decided to put “It’s not a game” along the top of the poster and “You’re dead” along the bottom. I liked this idea because it left a lot of space for images and other text to be added to the poster easily and quickly. I decided to have the text style set to: Arial Rounded MT Bold. I decided to have the font a blood red colour. I thought that this would be a good colour to use because it would draw people’s attention to the poster as the red gets brought out by the black background.
The next stage I decided to do was to look on the internet for a picture of a crash to show the effects of dangerous driving. This took me quite a long time because there weren’t many pictures that I liked enough. I searched many different things into Google, things like: car crashes, crashes, head on collisions, car collisions and serious crashes. I finally found the picture after around 30minutes. I was slightly annoyed that it took me this long but I was happy to finally find a decent picture.
I’m not delighted with my poster at this stage but it’s only the initial design and there is a lot of room for changing it. Below is the first design of my poster

Drive time - No seatbelts
Another big problem on the road is no seatbelts; the chances of dying in a crash are raised by nearly 30% higher than if you were wearing a seatbelt. Some people will see wearing a seatbelt as un-cool and not impressive, some people just can’t be bothered to wear a seatbelt. I think that most people today are just used to putting on a seatbelt and don’t think twice, for me it’s the first thing I do because I have always had to from a young age and now I just do it.
Wearing a seatbelt is seriously dangerous and not just for you, if you are in the front of the car there is a big chance that you can go through the windscreen and go quite a long way depending on the speed the car you are travelling in crashes, if you are in the back seat then you don’t only run the risk to yourself, you can hit the person in front of you and cause serious damage to the person in front of you.
I asked a fire fighter from East Sussex fire brigade about the problems of not wearing seatbelts and he said this “it’s amazing how many people aren’t wearing seatbelts on our roads. It is such a danger for people to not wear seatbelts; they can stop you being thrown through your windscreen. The amount of crashes I have had to go to and seen a body laying 50ft away from the car is scary. It’s just as dangerous for someone in the backseat to not wear a seatbelt because they aren’t putting just themselves at risk. Whatever the speed the car is doing, the person will go head first into the seat in front of them and injure the person in front of them”.
Failure to wear a seat belt contributes to more fatalities than any other single traffic safety-related behaviour 63% of people killed in accidents are not wearing seat belts. Wearing a seat belt use is still the single most effective thing we can do to save lives and reduce injuries on British roads. Data suggests that education alone is not doing the job with young people, especially males ages 16 to 25 the age group least likely to buckle up. Seat belts are the most effective safety devices in vehicles today, estimated to save 9,500 lives each year. Yet only 68 percent of the motor vehicle occupants are buckled. If 90 percent of people in Britain buckle up, we will prevent more than 5,500 deaths and 132,000 injuries annually. The cost of unbuckled drivers and passengers goes beyond those killed and the loss to their families. We all pay for those who don't buckle up in higher taxes, higher health care and higher insurance costs. On average, inpatient hospital care costs for an unbelted crash victim are 50 percent higher than those for a belted crash victim. Society bears 85 percent of those costs, not the individuals involved. Every American pays about $580 a year toward the cost of crashes. If everyone buckled up, this figure would drop significantly. By reaching the goal of 90 percent seat belt use, and 25 percent reduction in child fatalities, about 8.8 billion will be saved annually.

reckless driving - speeding and peer pressure
Speeding has become one of the main driving offences to be listed under “reckless driving”. It is becoming more and more common on the roads as faster cars are being designed and people are getting more impatient. The fire fighter I questioned said this “speeding is becoming increasingly dangerous as more and more people do it, people see one person getting away with it so think its ok to do it themselves. Some of the crashes I’ve had to go to have been horrendous, most of these crashes have been teenagers and it’s a horrible sight to see. Speeding is very dangerous no matter how good a driver you are because the faster you’re going the more dangerous the crash will be. It can be very dangerous for everyone and creates a bigger and harder job for us as we have to pull more than one person out of wreckage. Nothing can prepare you for what you will see”

What I will make is an animation of a person driving along the road not wearing his seatbelt and slightly speeding. He will then see a car pull out ahead of him, he will try to break heavily but without success. He will then swerve to avoid the car by going into the other lane on the road, there will be another car coming along. The person without the seatbelt will crash into the other car head on at 50mph and go through the windscreen and travel through the air before landing in the road and being hit by another car. This will cause him to be sent up in the air and come crashing down onto the road and dying.
This will hopefully give the watcher of this a reason to wear their seatbelts if they don’t already.
Sentences describing the series of events:
1. Go to a shot of the man driving his car so you can clearly see that he isn’t wearing a seatbelt.
2. Go to a shot from the drivers point of view so you can see the speed he is doing and the road ahead
3. While in the drivers point of view see a car pull out just ahead of him
4. Turn to see the drivers face looking scared and shocked because of the car pulling out in front of him
5. Will be a shot of the car swerving into the other side of the road in an attempt to avoid the car, this will be in a bird’s eye view
6. Still in the bird’s eye view we will see another car coming along the road head on to the car with the person without a seatbelt.
7. The camera will go to a view of the other driver that is seeing the car swerve onto the other side of the road and coming head on
8. There will be the head on crash
9. There will be a bird’s eye view of the man flying out of the windscreen
10. He will land and roll along the road
11. He will be hit by another car and sent into the air
12. He will land back on the road in a heap dead
